Umami Mami

A pseudonym of Jen Che—an intentionally playful nod to cultural heritage that leaks levity into a bleak visual landscape. They are a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of biological anatomy, computational design, pop colors, and extreme subcultures. Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, they are now based in Oregon.

Jen approaches visual creation through the lens of an engineer, holding a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on biomechanics and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in materials. In the arts, they are self-taught. This technical foundation directly fuels a fascination with structural transformation, the human form, and the tactile quality of materials. Drawing inspiration from death metal, vintage print media, and modern technological aesthetics, their resulting imagery juxtaposes dark, psychological depths with uncompromising precision and extravagant colors.
